Cindy and I moved to Sarasota in 1987 from Illinois. Cindy joined St. Andrew that same year. I didn’t. She had been a member of a UCC church in Illinois. I rarely came to church with her in those days – Christmas and maybe Easter.

We have two children, Stacey and Shani, and two grandchildren, Jim and Alex.

I was brought up Catholic. Half the time, when not racked by guilt, I wasn’t even sure if I believed in God. Church was a bunch of hypocrites peddling guilt and asking for money, I thought. So, it’s interesting and telling that I’m relating our church story here.

One day in the early 2000’s I decided to start going to church with Cindy regularly. Twenty years had passed since Cindy joined. One Sunday I took communion, and, in 2007, I too joined with Cindy as my sponsor.

Love resides at St. Andrew. You can feel it. We all have experienced it here in one way or another, from Lenten Services, to Celebrations of life, to Teddy bears, to Sharon Scott’s booming voice, to Christmas Eve, to Jim Cox playing practically anything, to food for poor children and others in need, to just any Sunday or Wednesday, to listening to our choir and wonderful, thoughtful pastors, and the hundreds and hundreds of other acts of love and kindness in between. That is Love in Action.
